Last week, Taylor Swift released folklore, an emotional indie-folk album unlike her pop-centric past. The songs are sad and mellow, the titles are uncapitalised and feature poetic descriptions about love, nature, yearning and feeling like an old cardigan.
And now, some fans have a theory that one of the songs on the album is about Swift’s ex and former One Direction member Harry Styles.
According to some fans, Taylor Swift’s “cardigan” is about our fave cardigan wearing boy. And, the weirdest bit? It’s not even because he loves a good cardi-fit.
The theory really started going once Swift released the music video for the song on the 24th of July. As some fans point out on Twitter, both songs feature their respective singers playing a piano in an abandoned environment.
Styles, dressed in a white tulle blouse, plays a grand piano in a large music room, while Swift seems to be playing years later surrounded by overgrown nature, almost as if she’s playing the same piano as Styles did years later when humanity is gone and the natural world begins to take over. Then, both music videos cut to them underwater.
Even weirder, the music video for “cardigan” came out on the same day as the ten year anniversary of One Direction. As one fan pointed out, “Harry Styles sings “I’m falling again,” in “Falling” and Taylor Swift sings “I knew you’d come back to me” in “cardigan” and I’m supposed to ignore that?”
Neither Harry Styles or Taylor Swift have responded to the fan theory but the evidence in favour of it speaks volumes. According EOnline!, the pair dated for a few months between 2012 to 2013 and were famously photographed walking together in Central Park.
