In ‘Raya and the Last Dragon,’ Kelly Marie Tran is Disney’s dragon searching princess

You’ll love the first trailer to Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon.

The first official trailer for Disney’s next animated film Raya and the Last Dragon just dropped, giving us our first real look at Kelly Marie Tran as Disney’s dragon-searching lone warrior princess. And, ngl, we love to see it.

The trailer begins with a young Raya (Kelly Marie Tran), dressed a bit like Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender in blue, and her trusty, adorable armadillo-like sidekick TukTuk. The pair are making their way through a secret long tunnel filled with traps and secret doors, with steps leading up to a fantastical garden with a blue crystal, before they are met with a warrior wearing an ominous spiritual mask.

Then, we cut to the present day, where adult Raya, now dressed in desert clothes and wielding a staff like Rey Skywalker, is now a lone warrior destined to track down the last dragon to save her kingdom and its divided people. We don’t get to meet said dragon in this first trailer, named Sisu and voiced by Awkwafina, but the art style looks almost-lifelike, clean and gorgeous.

First announced at Disney’s D23 expo last year, Raya and the Last Dragon is a new Disney-animated adventure film inspired by Southeast Asian culture and fairy tales. The film was originally slated for a November release but is now coming to theatres on the 12th of March 2021. That said, we have no idea whether the film will skip cinemas and head straight to Disney Plus like Mulan and Soul.
