The reveal of A.D. in the finale of Pretty Little Liars left the fandom pretty shook, when they found out that Spencer Hastings had an evil twin, Alex Drake, the entire time.

But a lot of fans were also not really into the finale and how it panned out.

Well, Troian Bellisario just sat down with ET, and actually revealed that there was an alternative ending where things ended up a little more grim.

“There was actually an amendment to the [original] ending,” she began.

“I don’t know if I’m supposed to say this – but I think originally the ending was supposed to be a little bit different to where Alex had kind of gotten away with it a little bit more, and the only person that was onto her was Toby.

“But I think that ultimately would’ve left things too much up in the air and we would’ve been worried for Spencer.”

Yeah, we can’t imagine fans would be too happy with that…

“So it was really fun because this way, Spencer got a happy ending, and all the girls got their happy ending, and Alex got to be with her family – which is great, but also in a little bit of a tricky situation,” she concluded.

The ending that the show eventually went with didn’t leave fans all to happy though, and Troian had to address that when she spoke to TV Line.

“You can’t satisfy everybody,” she said in the interview.

“I’ve had to consciously remove myself from looking at people’s responses. As wonderful as it is when you get messages from people saying how much they like your performance, all you have to do is see that one person who’s like ‘This is stupid, I hate you’ and it’s gut-wrenching.

“Like, this is a story our creator came up with, and it’s my job to tell that story to the best of my abilities. So when someone says you were horrible, it’s hard not to take that in.”
