1. He’s called The Honey Badger because...

Back in a 2012 interview, the quirky sports star said that he couldn’t stop watching honey badgers on Animal Planet

“I saw the honey badger and became fascinated. It is just so aggressive and will never say die,” he said, dubbing the creature his spirit animal. “One of the stories which inspired me is that it is documented that a honey badger killed a male lion in a one-on-one battle.”

2. He was previously in a longterm relationship

Cummins was dating Norwegian artist Martine Thomassen for five years before they ended their relationship 18 months ago, freeing The Honey Badger up for Australia’s taking.

“I finally came to Australia and thought I was going to learn English but, bloody hell, I had to learn not only Australian but also ‘Cummins’, which is like a whole different story,” Thomassen told Perth Now in 2015.

3. He’s a down to earth Aussie bloke

Following the success of self-proclaimed bogan Sophie Monk’s season of The Bachelorette, producers realised that both a public profile and a relatable nature was key.

Cummins ticks both boxes with his hilarious post-game interviews and funny social media banter already making him a national treasure.

4. He puts family first

In 2014, Cummins walked away from the Wallabies to focus on something far more important to him: his family. After his dad, Mark, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Cummins temporarily put his career on hold to help raise his siblings, two of whom have cystic fibrosis.

He then played for Japan’s Coca-Cola Sparks for two years before wrapping up his tenure in 2016.
