‘Enola Holmes’ star Millie Bobby Brown on what advice her character would give her

“Stop feeling sorry for yourself.”

In Enola Holmes, Millie Bobby Brown plays the titular character and your new favourite teen heroine. When her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) goes mysteriously missing on her 16th birthday, Enola sets out into the wild and scary world to find her. On her journey, she meets the young Lord Tewksbury (Louis Partridge), and has to outwit her brothers, Mycroft Holmes (Sam Claflin) and *the* Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill).

And, brilliantly, she kinda does just that. See, unlike other female action-film stars, Millie, as Enola, isn’t sidelined by her male counterparts, she’s the film’s action hero—a narrative achievement that Millie feels proud to be a part of. She loves how independently badass her on-screen character is.

“You always watch films where the men save the women and it’s the same story over and over again,” Millie told Girlfriend. “We’re gonna get bored of that one day, we got to try something new. And so with this film, Enola is saving Tewksbury. And I love that.”

“I love that she’s not finding him, she’s saving him. He’s in danger and she’s physically able to save him, so why not? And I think that that’s what makes her a true superhero.”

In fact, she feels that, as an actor with so much pent up emotion, she could do well to learn a trick or two from Enola.

“’Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Stop crying all the time. Get over it,’ There you go, [that’s what she’d say],” Millie says. “I’m more emotional than Enola. Enola’s a lot more hardcore and her feelings aren’t the forefront of everything. And I’m an actor, so that’s my job.”

“I’m constantly using my emotions in everyday life. And so when I’m laughing, I’m laughing. And when I’m crying, I’m devastated, the world is ending. So everything’s very dramatic with me. So I think she’d say, ‘stop being so dramatic.’ That’s what she’d say.”
