Goodbye to the campy, cute, joyous TV show Katy Keene: it’s sadly been confirmed that the Riverdale spin-off has been cancelled by The CW after one season.
After the sad announcement, the show’s lead actress Lucy Hale opened up personally to her fans in an emotional Instagram post. The former Pretty Little Liars actress shared the video, which she apparently tried to film multiple times, saying, “Sad to deliver this news! But I love the show. I love what it stands for. And mostly I love YOU. To the cast, crew, and all involved… adore you.”
Hale opened up the video saying she was a blubbering mess and “y’all don’t wanna see that.” She felt that couldn’t just post a picture because “nothing would do justice to how I feel about Kate Keene or how I feel about the people involved with it. Truly, one of the highlights of my life, such a joy from top to bottom,” she said tearily.
She said she was heartbroken the show wasn’t picked up for a second season, explaining this has happened to her multiple times throughout her career. “It’s a job that has broken my heart numerous times,” she said, talking about the harsh nature of the entertainment industry.
Holding back tears, Lucy said playing Katy was “a role of the lifetime,” and thanked everyone involved on the series. “I think that sometimes things just don’t work out and maybe it was just not the right time for it, I don’t know, I’m a little confused,” she said. The pandemic has had a pretty harsh effect on pretty much every industry, with the future of a lot of TV shows and films, and when we could expect them to arrive, on shaky ground. After movie fans are also waiting in limbo, with a small update last week about when the sequel could be dropping.
Hale’s post got a lot of love from her former Pretty Little Liars castmates, Ian Harding and Keegan Allen as well as some current Riverdale cast members, including Camila Mendes and Madelaine Petsch.
If you wanna relive the adventures of Katy one more time you can catch the series on Foxtel Go.
