Lily Collins Reaction To Her New Movie ‘To The Bone’ Is Kind Of Heartbreaking

"I saw myself in the photo and my heart dropped."

Lily Collins‘ new Netflix movie To The Bone hasn’t even aired yet, but it’s already stirred up a lot of controversy.

Because the film centres on a girl struggling with an eating disorder, critics are afraid of it being glamourised and young girls being influenced, but the reality is that it’s a conversation that needs to be spoken about.

One way for that to happen is for it to be portrayed in the media, and for it to be portrayed in the realest way it can be.

For Lily, it doesn’t get more real than this, since she herself suffered from an eating disorder.

Having such a strong connection to the character she plays, she felt the full weight of it when watching the final cut.

Speaking with Net-A-Porter’s The Edit magazine, Lily explained that her mum was in shock also.

“The first time she was a bit in shock. The second time I looked over at the end and she was sobbing; it really hit her hard,” Lily shared. “I knew it wouldn’t be easy with the book [“Unfiltered”], talking about all this. I never wanted her to feel responsible; she’s like my best friend.”

She adds, “When she saw the movie, I think she recognised so much of me in [my character] Ellen. There’s a scene where I’m taking my clothes off to be weighed by Carrie Preston, my stepmom in the movie, who takes a photo on her phone and shows it to me. I didn’t think she’d actually take one but she did. I saw myself in the photo and my heart dropped.”

“So when my mom saw the film, she saw Lily’s reaction because she knows me the best.”

Lily went deeper into explaining her own disorder: “When I went through my eating disorder, I never sought medical assistance.

“I created myths in my head about how I should get through things, so the idea that I could surround myself with truth and feel comfortable enough to speak mine allowed me to breathe.”
