KJ Apa is landing himself some incredible roles recently, and we couldn’t be more proud of him.
Not only is he the star of Riverdale, he’s teaming up with Maya Mitchell in the upcoming flick “The Last Summer” and NOW, he’s replaced Kian Lawley in “The Hate U Give”.
Playing the role of Chris, KJ will star alongside the incredible Amandla Stenberg as her boyfriend!
Kian was fired from the movie back in February, when racist comments he had made surfaced online.
“Due to the controversy surrounding his past comments and behaviuor, Kian Lawley will no longer appear in The Hate U Give,” a spokesperson for 20th Century Fox said in a statement at the time. “The studio plans to recast the role of Chris and reshoot scenes as needed.”
Kian at the time also apologised for his actions.
Talking to BuzzFeed News, he said: “Words have power and can do damage. I own mine and I am sorry. I respect Fox’s decision to recast this role for The Hate U Give as it is an important story, and it would not be appropriate for me to be involved considering the actions of my past.”
CAA talent agency also cut ties with Kian when the video came out. Yikes.
The film is based on the 2017 novel by Angie Thomas, which is inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. It follows a police shooting of a black teenager, covering topics of “race, interracial dating, political activism, grief, friendship, wealth disparity, police brutality, addiction, and the media’s depiction of African Americans”.
We cannot wait!
