There’s currently a very dark cloud hanging over 2017 after one of our fave boy bands, MKTO, officially confirmed that they’ve split.
The super talented duo, made up of Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller, first formed back in 2010 and over the years they’ve blessed our eardrums with such killer tunes as ‘Thank You’ and ‘Classic.’
Even Taylor Swift was a huge fan, having invited them to perform with her on her 1989 World Tour. So pretty sure she’s just as devo as everyone else rn.
So what went wrong? Tony recently revealed on Twitter that the band had called it quits and while he hasn’t given a reason, a look back through his tweets seem to suggest that there was some sort of disagreement with their record label.
The guys haven’t released new music since 2016, which was already pretty suss, and then in February Tony tweeted that he “can’t wait to be out of that deal.”
When a worried fan replied asking what was wrong, he replied: “just wish we could release new music love.”
And just last week, he dropped some cryptic tweets which made it pretty clear it was all over.
And he’s slowly been dropping more clues about what went down ever since. When a fan said they “need more music from ya’ll”, Tony replied, “Wish that was possible love!” He also clarified that the split has nothing to do with Malcolm after another fan asked if they are still besties. “More than ever,” he said.
And most recently Tony started an #AskMeAnything sesh, but said there are “certain things I cannot discuss” about MKTO, which again sounds like there’s some sort of legal issues involved. When a fan asked why they broke up, he had to remind her that he can’t go there.
But he did reveal that the thing he’ll miss the most is performing with his BFF Malcolm.

In terms of what’s next for the boys, Tony has been hitting up songwriters and producers on Twitter for collabs so we’re sure he’ll be dropping some solo tunes in no time. And with a voice like that, we have no doubt he’ll kill it!
Meanwhile, Malcolm has a big year ahead of him, with two movies and new music coming out soon!
Can’t believe they’re really over! So sad. But we’re sure the next chapter for both of them will be EPIC! And luckily we’ll always have their amazing music. MKTO, thank you.
