Mere hours after the news broke from The DisInsider that former One Direction star Harry Styles “signed on” to play Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid live-action remake, new reports have come out saying that he “turned down” the role.

While he was formally offered the part, the 25-year-old musician has reportedly turned down the role in the musical, where he would have starred opposite Halle Bailey, The Wrap reports.

The Wrap reports that the disappointing news about the 25-year-old musician, who would have starred alongside Chloe x Halle actress Halle Bailey (as Ariel).

The former One Direction band member has been a fan-favourite to play the role of Prince Eric since news of disney’s live-action remake was announced, with that jaw-line, hair, and voice. He was the ideal candidate. Now, however, those dreams have been crushed.

Whoever is eventually chosen as Prince Eric will star with Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Awkwafina as Scuttle and Melissa McCarthy as the villainess Ursula.

No more casting news has been revealed from Walt Disney Studios, but word on the street is that more announcements will be made at next weekend’s D23 Expo, where director Rob Marshall is set to dish on the new film.

The annual D23 Expo will go from August 23rd until August 25th.
