Every one is counting down the days until the Beauty And The Beast live-action remake arrives, but turns out it won’t ~exactly~ be the movie we all know and love. There’s a bit of a plot twist and it gives Belle much more of a girl power role…
In the OG Disney version (in case it’s not etched in your memory), Belle’s father Maurice is a kooky inventor who is the laughing stock of the town, #jerks. But Emma Watson reckons that they could do better and has told Entertainment Weekly that in the upcoming remake, the roles will be mixed-up and Belle will be the inventor!
“I was like, ‘Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn’t fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time? So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor,” Emma explained.
This actually kinda makes sense if you think about it. Fans have often said how the first part of story doesn’t make ~that~ much sense because reading books wouldn’t make an ENTIRE town think Belle was odd. But if she is the nutty inventor, the ‘outsider’ stigma fits better.
But how does she end up at the Beast’s castle if she’s not taking her dad’s inventions to the fair? Well, Papa Maurice is now a music-maker in the live-action film!
Set decorator Katie Spencer explained how this works to the timeline: “Kevin Kline as Maurice is making all these music boxes that have to tell the story of Belle not travelling. She’s overprotected in a way, by her father, because she’s lost her mother. So, we’ve made all these music boxes that represent different countries of the world, so she can see what she’s missing.”
Do you like the change? Or do you wish they’d just stick to the Disney version?
