Is ‘Banana Split’ the new ‘Kissing Booth’… but better?

It's an unconventional rom-com featuring shirtless, long-haired Dylan Sprouse.

Banana Split is an unconventional love-triangle movie that’s freshly dropped on U.S. Netflix and we reckon you’re gonna want to put this one on your to watch list. If you’re already up to date on the comforting and mostly wholesome teen romance content The Kissing Booth 2 and the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, this might tide you over while we wait for those highly anticipated third films

While it was initially released back in 2018, there’s nothing like the power of Netflix to give a film a second wind. The comedy follows April, played by Hannah Marks who is also the film’s co-writer. April is left devastated and floundering for the summer after breaking up with her longtime boyfriend Nick, played by Dylan Sprouse

Before they head off to college, April is gutted to see Nick move on with a new girl called Clara, played by Liana Liberato. Following the conventional teen romance tropes, April starts out determined to hate Clare. However, this is where Banana Split grabs the wheel and swerves. Instead of being pit against each other, April and Clara end up becoming friends whose relationship is stronger than either of the ones they have with Nick.

Like The Kissing Booth, it’s by no means a perfect movie. But it is a smart, warm look at Gen Z friendships and ultimately has a message we can get behind: women.

“I feel like people don’t really write about friendship that much because, I guess, the whole point of a movie is to have conflict,” Marks noted in an interview earlier this year. “But I think it’s such a beautiful relationship. One of my favourite movies is Frances Ha, that dealt with female friendship really well, so it’s exciting to follow in those footsteps.”

While it’s not yet on Aussie Netflix *just* yet, Banana Split is one we’re keeping an eye out for.
