WATCH: Here’s what we know about Ariana Grande’s new album “Thank U, Next”
The release of Ariana Grande’s fifth studio album, Thank U, Next, is nearing with pre-orders officially starting this Friday, January 25, and three songs off the album are already climbing the pop charts. Now, Ariana has released the full tracklist, and one song has sparked an intense response from fans.
Titled: ‘break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored,’ the song is the final track on the album and fans have already begun speculating that it might have the same vibes as pre-released songs ‘Thank U, Next’ and ‘7 Rings’.
But fans are also curious: Who, exactly, is this hypothetical girlfriend?
Some believe the song title is directed toward Ari’s ex-Big Sean — who, lest we forget, Ari revealed could still “get it,” in the ‘Thank U, Next’ video. Big Sean is currently dating singer Jhené Aiko.
Some fans took issue with Ariana’s decision to include the track, despite the fact she is yet to confirm who it is about.
“Okay but if ariana is referring to big sean with jhene aiko in her song ‘break up with your girlfriend I’m bored’…we might have some problems bc jhene is my girl,” one fan tweeted.
Although Grande is yet to comment who the song is about, given that the track was likely created alongside some of Ariana’s best friends it could be easily fictionalised.
However, more fans speculated the song was actually about Grande’s ex-fiance Pete Davidson. Given that Grande and her most recent ex, Davidson, had a whirlwind romance, some fans assumed that this track is about encouraging him to end things with the last woman he dated (although it’s important to note both Ariana and Pete were single when they became involved last year).
Despite that theory also holding merit, a third also emerged. From the three tracks that have already been released from this album – ‘Imagine’, a song about a relationship Ariana wants to live in, ‘7 Rings’, a song about celebrating self-worth, and ‘Thank U, Next’, a song about thanking her exes for all that they’ve taught her. The album reads like a story, a girl who found herself after a relationship’s end and is appreciating those who were along on the journey. Since “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored” is the final track on the album, maybe it’s not about any of her ex-boyfriends: Maybe, instead, this song is about her future relationships.
Whoever it’s about, we’re sure it’s going to be on repeat for the month of Feb. The album comes out on February 8th.
