“The Coven/Murder House AHS crossover season won’t be happening next year…because it’s happening THIS YEAR. AHS #8 WITCHES RULE THIS SEPTEMBER,” Ryan Murphy just tweeted, sending me, and the rest of the AHS fandom into a SPIN.
If you’re into the anthology series, then you may agree with me when I say that season 1 Murder House and season 3 Coven are definitely the shows best seasons.
With the inclusions of Jessica Lange and Connie Britton, it was always going to be hard for other seasons to match up, but there is something fundamentally engaging about these two seasons, that morphing them into a crossover is probably the smartest thing Murphy could have done.
Especially after that season 6 Roanoke debacle…
As mentioned before, the show is an anthology, so each season has a fresh storyline and characters (usually pulled from the same pool of regulars like Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters). However, there are a lot of links and connections between the seasons that Murphy deliberately shows us. In a way, it helps to make sense of a crossover season.
Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Kathy Bates are the only cast members that have been officially confirmed for season 8 so far, as well as newcomer Joan Collins, who will be playing Evan’s grandmother.
But who will play who? In season one, Sarah played the medium Billie Dean Howard, but in season three, she was Cordelia Foxx. Evan was the sexy ghost Tate Langdon in season one, whereas he played a sexy zombie, Kyle Spencer, in season 3.
We don’t know what roles each cast member will take on, but we absolutely can’t wait to see what Ryan does with this new material.
All we can hope and pray for is that Ryan’s promise of fan favourites returning means that Jessica Lange will be back to F SHIT UP.
“You will see so many fan favourites return that you’ll feel like it’s The Love Boat,” Ryan told EW. “It’s a very high concept.”
