It was all just a mess.

13 Reasons Why is potentially the most controversial TV show on Netflix, with its graphic subject matter that touches on themes like mental health, teen suicide and rape, it’s somehow now managed to draw criticism for a whole different reason – the new narrator.

Who is she and why is she new the voice of 13 Reasons Why?

Season three is essentially an extended murder mystery, and follows new character Ani (Grace Saif), who gets close to fellow Liberty High student  Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice), the boy who raped both Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) and Jessica (Alisha Boe) as well as did a whole lot of other messed up things.

The new narratorAni, is a confusing mess and doesn’t add any more depth to the story, nor does she give viewers greater insight into what’s going down.

Ani acts as Bryce’s ‘redeemer’ throughout the series, even though after the horror of season one and season two, it would be hard to see Bryce with any humanity.

While Ani claims to “know things about people”, she immediately cements herself as team ‘Bryce’, which is an interesting decision, considering we have not met Ani prior to this season and feel like we’ve missed out on a lot of backstory.

Her motives – befriending Clay only to accuse him of murder as well as her treatment of Jessica – are as odd as they are conflicting and just leave us with an odd taste in our mouths.

Frankly, it was weird.

Twitter had a lot of reactions, with some people even calling for the show to be made sans Ani.
