Fans of the song will probably have noticed that in one particular line, the lyrical rhythm is quite similar to a line from TLC's iconic hit No Scrubs.
"Boy, let's not talk too much/ Grab on my waist and put that body on me" (Sheeran) and "No, I don't want no scrubs/ A scrub is a guy that can't get no love from me" (TLC) share a striking similarity, and Ed is well aware of this.
Billboard reports that Ed has decided to validate the comparison, by adding "No Scrubs" co-writers Kandi Burruss and Tameka "Tiny" Colette, of the girl groupXscape, along with Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs to the song's credits.
This isn't the first time a 'similarity' between songs has caused problems for artists. In 2015, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars had to add the five writers of the Gap Band'sI Don’t Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance (Oops, Up Side Your Head), toUptown Funk. Also in 2015, Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke were ordered to pay $7.4million to Marvin Gaye's children, who filed a suit claiming Blurred Linescopied their father's song Got To Give It Up.
In all reality, this was a smart move by Ed to avoid a hefty lawsuit and the girls seem very happy with their credits.
Kandi Burruss, who is currently starring on The Real Housewives Of Atlanta, took to Instagram to celebrate her writing credit.
"Congrats #edsheeran @teddysphotos for having the #1 album! & thank you for allowing @majorgirl & I to share in the success of #ShapeOfYou! #1 for 7 weeks! This is how I dance every time this song comes on. #ShapeOfYou #Blessings."
We're sure the girls back in Atlanta will be copping an earful about this one! Congrats to everyone involved.
