According to E! News, her partying had gotten out of hand in the last few weeks and it was the 'wake-up call' she needed to set her on the path of sobriety.
“She slipped up and thought she could handle it. This is obviously a huge wake-up call,” a source told the publication.
“Demi doesn’t want to die and she’s very grateful to be alive. She will be leaving the hospital and heading straight to rehab. Her family has been by her side supporting her and is getting her the help she needs.”
Demi was admitted to hospital earlier this week after an overdose.
A publicist for the star spoke out on her behalf and said she was thankful for the outpouring of support she had received.
"Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support," her rep said.
She has battled addiction, mental illness and an eating disorder for years. In 2011, the entertainer entered rehab, where she was also treated for bipolar disorder, bulimia, self-harm and addiction.
Here's hoping she gets the help she needs.
Sending our love to you, Demi <3.
