"There's bi-phobia from the straight community and from the LGBT community. There's a lack of acceptance," Halsey, who is also bisexual, explained. "It happens in TV all the time when people write bisexual characters as going through a phase or struggling with something. It's part of some mental breakdown or rebellion storyline, and that just sucks."
She continued, "Bisexuality as a taboo. 'Don't tell your mom' or 'We shouldn't do this' or 'This feels so wrong but it's so right,'" Halsey said.
Fans were quick to reference Demi's song "Cool For The Summer," which has the lyrics, "Don't tell your mother," and Katy's "I Kissed A Girl," which has "This feels so wrong but it's so right."
Specific, right?
Demi, being Demi, responded pretty fast on Twitter.
"You know a song is a hit when people are still talking about the lyrics two years later. 💁🏻#shhhhdonttellyourmother," she wrote, injecting a decent dose of sass.
Although a lot of fans applauded Demi for her shade, others called her out for missing the point completely.
"@ddlovato demi this is not the way to deal with things?? the song does kinda imply that two women having an "affair" is something to be ashamed of.
"@ddlovato please be careful with your words, yes the song was a hit and yet I know you didn't meant it like that but a bisexual woman has every right."
"@ddlovato Or you could reflect on what Halsey was saying and use this as a chance to recognize the faults in those lyrics? You get off on drama tho"
"@ddlovato should be ashamed of or kept secret because it's two women. but sure demi, it's a hit so who cares what message it sends, right? wrong."
Halsey hasn't yet responded.
