The #FreeBritney movement saw Britney battle for her autonomy after being in a conservatorship since 2008.
The conservatorship meant that Britney's estate, financial assets, as well as aspects of her personal life were under the control of her father, Jamie Spears, and the Bessemer Trust.
In September 2021, Britney's father filed to end the court conservatorship in the Los Angeles Superior Court, following months of public pressure.
"As Mr Spears has said, again and again, all he wants is what's best for his daughter," the court document read.
"If Ms Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr Spears believes that she should get that chance."
Britney's conservatorship officially ended in November that year.
"Effective today, the conservatorship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is hereby terminated," the judge overseeing the case, Judge Brenda Penny, said while making the ruling.
Throughout Britney's fight for freedom, the internet rallied behind the pop star, calling out the Spears family for their treatment of the pop singer. This includes American talk show host Wendy Williams who elicited more than a few gasps when she said the phrase "death to all of them" when discussing Mr and Mrs Spears on her talk show. And yes, that is the sound that once consumed your TikTok FYP.
After social media users questioned Jamie Lynn for being silent throughout the whole ordeal, the actress spoke out during an emotional Instagram video.
”I think it’s extremely clear that since the day I was born I’ve only loved and adored and supported my sister," Jamie said. "I don’t care if she wants to run away to the rainforest and have a zillion babies in the middle of nowhere, or if she wants to come back and dominate the world the way she has so many times before. I have nothing to gain or lose either way. This situation does not affect me because I am only her sister who is only concerned about her happiness.”
The Zoey 101 star continued: “Maybe I didn’t support her the way the public would like me to with a hashtag on a public platform, but I can assure you I’ve supported my sister long before there was a hashtag. And I’ll support her long after. Note that.”
Things really started heating up between the sisters in July 2021 when the Circus singer shared a lengthy Instagram post about her conservatorship - revealing that she wasn't a fan of a past performance her younger sister Jamie gave to one of her songs.
Posting a picture of the quote: "Take me as I am or kiss my a**, eat s**t and step on legos", Britney revealed details of her complicated past, while at the same time announcing she was quitting music.
Discussing her little sister's performance of her song Till The World Ends during the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards, Britney confessed that she was not a fan of the surprise.
"I don't like that my sister showed up at an awards show and performed MY SONGS to remixes!!!!! My so-called support system hurt me deeply!!!!"
The Oops!... I Did It Again singer ended the caption by telling her followers they were lucky she posted anything at all and telling haters to "go and read a f***ing book" if they didn't want to see her dancing videos.
Britney's post garnered a lot of support from many famous faces including Paris Hilton, Snooki and Selma Blair. It even prompted a clip from the performance in question, featuring Jamie, to resurface on Twitter and TikTok
In the footage, as Jamie took the stage to perform the remix, Britney smiled and clapped from the audience, but fans claimed that her face told a different story.
Then, in January 2022, amid a heavy fever, Britney took to Twitter to vent multiple frustrations, and her sister Jamie got a few shoutouts... albeit, not very flattering ones.
In a lengthy note post shared to the platform, the pop star lamented that her security was unable to leave the premises to get her medication.
"It wasn't what he said to me, IT WAS THE SARCASM in his voice when he told me he couldn't go get it for me...," Britney wrote.
In her ill state, the Gimme More singer took to her phone to see that her sister, Jamie Lynn, was promoting her new book, Things I Should Have Said, on Good Morning America.
"I watched it with a 104° fever lol and it was actually kind of nice having a fever so high cause i had to surrender to not caring," the celebrity penned.
Britney then went on to discuss the two things that rubbed her the wrong way about her sister's interview.
"The 2 things that did bother me that my sister said was how my behaviour was out of control. She was never around me much 15 years ago at that time... so why are they even talking about that unless she wants to sell a book at my expense."

She continued: "the lady mentioned why did she accuse you of doing remixes to her songs...," referring to that Radio Disney Music Awards tribute.
"I know it may sound like a silly thing to most people but I wrote a lot of my songs and my sister was the baby. She never had to work for anything. Everything was always given to her !!!"
The singer confessed she asked her sister why she took part in the remix, to which Jamie supposedly replied: "It wasn't my idea."
Britney ended her post by saying she was taking a break from social media and that her family "ruined (her) dreams".
An hour later she jumped back online to announce the news that her fiancé, Sam Asghari, had procured her some meds.
While Jamie Lynn promotes her new book, in February 2022, it was announced that Britney has her own memoir on the way.
The tell-all book is said to document the pop-star's rise to fame, her relationship with her family, as well as detail her experience with the conservatorship.
Page Six reported that, following a bidding war, Simon & Schuster secured the "record-breaking" deal for approximately US $15m (over $20m in AUD).
That's the latest... but with this memoir on the way, we're sure more is to come.
