Bebe Rexha has been killing the game for years now and we can’t get enough of her music. The 29-year-old released her debut album, Expectations, in April last year and she’s already hard at work on her second record and we are soooo excited for it! GF was lucky enough to speak to Bebe about all things music, her life and what’s coming next for her.
Congrats on taking out Country Song of the Year at the recent I Heart Radio awards with your song ‘Meant To Be’. Are you surprised at how popular this song still is over a year after its release?
Thank you. Absolutely! That song was just so surprising to me and I never thought that it would just be that big and it’s incredible. For me, it shows that music doesn’t have to have any more boundaries, it’s just about playing the best song that you could.
We saw that you also jammed a little with the Backstreet Boys backstage at the I Heart Radio awards. How was that??
Yes, oh my god it was awesome! I’ve always been a fan of them so when I saw then and started singing with them, it was an epic moment.
You’ve probably had plenty of surreal moments like that over the last few years. Do you have a fave moment that you just can’t still believe happened?
Actually at the I Heart Radio awards this past week I got to meet Steve Tyler from Aerosmith and I’m such a massive fan and that was a really, really cool moment.
You released a new single ‘Last Hurrah’ in February. Is this the first taste of a new album that you’re working on?
Yes, I have been working on my new album and I’ve been putting a lot of hard work into it and hopefully I’ll release it this year. It’s been a really fun process and very therapeutic and there’s a lot of anthems on there and it’s about self-love and I can’t wait to put it out!
Has the process of writing and releasing this new music been different to Expectations?
Yeah, I think that I’ve really tried to let down my walls as much as possible and really not have anything hold me back.
You hosted your second annual Women in Harmony event last month and musicians like Charli XCX, Noah Cyrus, Ashlee Simpson, and Sabrina Carpenter attended. Could you tell us a little bit about this initiative and why you created it?
Women in the music business… it’s tough. Sometimes I feel like we’re put to compete with each other and I think that happens because there’s not enough room for us at the table and I wanted to have all female musicians come together and support each other and become friends and have a safe place where we can talk about our journeys and what’s happening with us and just to make more room for other females that are coming up in the business.
Summer is coming up for you guys in the US. What are you looking forward to this summer?
Well, I’m going to be travelling a lot so I’m looking forward to seeing new places. I hope I get a day just to be at the pool with my dog and my mum and my dad. I’m also just looking forward to seeing the world and being able to do what I love is just such a blessing and I’m just looking forward to doing what I love. It’s really awesome.
