Male makeup artists have taken the beauty world by storm but unfortunately out not everyone is onboard with the progressive movement.
Super talented MUA Jauan Durbin found that out the hard way when his mum made some heartbreaking comments about him wearing makeup.
The 18-year-old college student recently tweeted a screenshot of a text conversation he had with her in which she basically disowned him just for being himself.
“I do not approve of this bullshyt,” she wrote, along with a photo of Jauan rocking perfect brows and winged eyeliner. “Wth is wrong with u. I am so disappointed. U are a male wth do u have on eyelashes, eyebrows and make up. I’m completely done.”
Jauan further explained on Twitter: “I want to cry man. My mom ain’t disappointed in me because I’m on the streets not doing anything with my life. She’s disappointed because I have on makeup. I’m in college. Heavily involved in Student Government and bettering myself and my community. And she’s disappointed in me because I have on makeup because she feels makeup is only for women. I’m sick. I’ve never felt like this.”
Luckily, we live in a world where not everyone is so narrow-minded so as Jauan’s tweet started to go viral, he was flooded with support from lots of compassionate people out there.
Then something amazing happened. MAC Cosmetics ended up sending him an epic gift pack and Jauan even hinted that they’ve got some sort of project in the works, tweeting “I look forward to working with you all!”
And it looks like having the spotlight on Jauan’s sad situation actually helped his mum have a change of heart.
“My mum has seen everything that’s going on and realised that I was kinda getting hurt by it,” he told Refinery29. “She’s affirmed me and told me that she was just nervous about what people would perceive me as because of the makeup.”
He also revealed that it was actually his mum who inspired him to live an authentic life, which makes her acceptance even more touching. “The courage I got is from my mum,” he said. “To be myself even if not everyone agrees.”
