Let’s be real — fake tanning can be a tricky art to master. There’s the orange knees, the weird uneven patches and the strange ‘tiger bread roll’ vibes you can get when it starts to fade.

And yet, there are some people out there who make the process look so effortless, it seems like they could achieve a perfect tan in the dark with their eyes closed!

Influencer and beauty entrepreneur Elle Ferguson is defs one of those people.

The Bondi babe is such a self-confessed ‘tanaholic’ that she created her own tanning brand, Elle Effect, to help people get a flawless, sunsafe glow.

Thankfully, Elle was kind enough to share her foolproof self-tanning tips with us mere mortals on Girlfriend’s The Beauty Boss podcast.

The first golden rule? Skin prep.

“You need to make sure you always exfoliate,” Elle told hosts Jacqui and Alana.

“Our skin sheds like a snake around every seven days. So it’s really great if you can get in the shower and give yourself a good exfoliation before you apply the tan, because you’re going to get the best results with the best skin.”

Next up, make sure you’ve got the right tools on hand.

“I always say, use the Lux Tan applicating mitt when you’re applying the Elle Effect tan in a circular motion,” she says.

She also shared a genius hack for getting a perfectly even tan when you’re flyin’ solo.

“A little trick if you can’t get to the middle of your back is you can actually put that glove over a wooden spoon or a ruler and elastic band around the bottom and then you’ve got like a long extended hand!” she says.

So, once you’ve got your flawless tan, how do you go about actually making it last? Elle advises keeping your showers as short as possible.

“You need to keep your skin hydrated!” she says “ Especially now in winter, don’t take too long showers as that’ll help keep that moisture that will maintain your tan.”
