Despite our best efforts and hair mask loyalty, not every day is a perfect hair day. For those times where your locks just won’t play ball, nailing a low-effort style makes a huge difference when getting ready in the morning. Enter: the low pony. Here’s how to master the perf low ponytail look.
Easy, cute, and low-key: being able to whip out a low pony style will always come in handy. But, you don’t have to believe us, some of your favourite style icons have rocked the low pony look in recent years. We’re thinking specifically of High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens at the 2015 Industry Dance Awards in Hollywood, and looks by Zendaya, Hailey Bieber, and more.
But, how exactly do you master the perfect low ponytail? Well, Jayne Wild, from Wild Life Hair walks us through.
Step 1
“Prepare hair with a thermal spray and a dollop of smoothing creme, then blow-dry using a round brush, smoothing it out as you go,” says Wild.
Frizz Ease Dream Curls Curl Defining Creme 150ml by John Frieda, $15.99 on Priceline.
John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Defining Creme is a non-sticky, non-greasy, alcohol-free formula that confines and controls even hard-to-manage curls, defines curl shape, and keeps hair from expanding.
Step 2
“Pull hair back into a ponytail while keeping the tension even to avoid ‘bubbles’,” adds Wild. “Take a small section (a few strands can be enough) and wrap around the base of the pony and pin in—this covers up the elastic and gives a better finish.”
Step 3
“Section off the ponytail and run a hair straightener through the loose hair—this will give you a glass-like finish. A light spray of hairspray will keep the style in place.”
Our hair straightener recommendation? Dyson’s newly-released Corrale™ straightener comes with all the bells and whistles, including flexing manganese copper alloy plate, sensitive temperature control, and a cordless design (so you won’t be bent over the sink, battling with a short cord ever again).

“Low ponytails are an easy style for those days when you can’t be bothered to wash your hair yet you still want to look groomed.”
