You’ve probably been using *this* popular beauty product wrong

And it’s not great news for your skin.

If you’re a face mask enthusiast (and anything like us,) chances are you rarely abide by the time guideline suggested on the packet. But despite the good intentions, leaving the product on your mug all day won’t do your skin any extra favours – in fact, it’s likely the opposite.

“The reason that face masks have recommended ties is dependent on the ingredients,” Dermatica’s leading consultant dermatologist Dr Natalia Spierings told Metro, adding that the ones that contain acid are the most problematic.

“These are time-sensitive because if they are left on for too long they can irritate the skin.”

And unless the dry, sensitised look is your jam, we’d avoid doing this with clay masks too.

“If the mask contains any irritant substance, such as glycolic acid, this can lead to irritant dermatitis,” Dr Daron Seukeran from skincare clinic sk:n explained.

“The substance might not irritate in the short duration, but if left on the skin too long it can cause redness, itching and dryness.”

So, what’s a girl in pursuit of perfection to do?

“It’s always recommended to use a moisturiser after a face mask, and make sure you stay within the guideline timings of the product to avoid any issues,” Dr Daron advises.

Something to remember next time you’re masking up.
