Avril supposedly started to deteriorate after she shot to fame in 2002, when her debut album Let Go went HAM.
The theory went that Avril's record label hired Melissa to do appearances for Avril, and distract the paparazzi.
Shortly after working on the second album, Avril grandfather died in 2003, which devastated her. So much so that Avril allegedly committed suicide.
No death was announced because Melissa was there to keep making millions of dollars as Avril.
Sounds legit, right?
According to fans, there are hints about the cover-up and Melissa's real identity are heard in the lyrics of "Under My Skin" from 2004.
By 2007, with the release of Best Damn Thing, Avril and Melissa's differences became even more obvious to fans. Personal style, a freckle on her arm, handwriting and even the shape of her eyes were all things that started becoming real evidence that Avril was replaced by Melissa.
Now, so many years later, Avril has FINALLY addressed the conspiracy theory.
Talking to Aussie radio host Jackie O on KISS 106.5, she asked, "Did you laugh at the rumors that went around where you no longer exist and there's a clone of you?"
"Yeah, some people think that I'm not the real me, which is so weird!" Avril replied. "Like, why would they even think that?"
Last month Avril made a comeback with new music, a single called "Head Above Water," after taking a five-year hiatus.
So complicated.
