Although Hannah Baker's story was mostly focused on through the show, each character was also dealing with their own battles, like Alisha Boe's character, Jessica.
As we learn towards the end, Jessica was raped by Bryce, and at the time, her boyfriend Justin let it happen. Jessica was drunk, and unable to give consent. After she realises what truly happened, Jessica starts to spiral.
But, there's actually been a lot of viewers who didn't at all sympathise with her character, instead, slut shaming her.
"I thought everyone would sympathise with Jessica because of what she's been through, to me that made the most sense," Alisha told Elite Daily. "She's a survivor and she's been trying to deal with it and she's acting out because of it."
We see in the show that Jessica keeps Bryce as a friend for a while after she found out the truth, and as much as it seemed mind-boggling, it was her way of handling it.
She continued, "But what I realised when the show came out, I was getting comments and being tagged in photos and fan theories that I can't help but look at, but basically, people are slut shaming Jessica. They're calling her a b**** and they're saying she deserved it and that I should take Justin back and I shouldn't be that drunk at a party and it made me take a second and step back and realise, wow, we as a society are not able to not blame the rape survivor but more we want to take Justin's side because he's charming and has a nice smile."
It is true, that a lot of people have instead sympathised with Justin in the show, which shows how well the show is depicting real issues that happen. No, it is not Jessica's fault for being "too drunk" at the party.
If someone is too drunk to give consent, and anything sexual happens, it is rape or assault.
Since Alisha has realised how much of an issue this is, she has decided to take more action against it.
"That makes me so hurt and angry and it makes me want to get more involved in being an advocate for women and men who are sexually assaulted and are survivors of rape because the conversation still hasn't changed," she said.
