The artists formally known as Zayn Malik
has officially (well in the eyes of the media, maybe not like legally) joined the ranks of famous singers like Cher, Madonna and Prince, by scrapping his surname. We've seen his social media handles change, and slowly started dropping the Malik ourselves but we were curious as to WHY he was doing it. Now we know... MOST RECENT: ZAYN'S GOT A NEW TATTOO AND THIS ONE IS NOT FAKE
In his Complex
interview he revealed that it's because he wants his solo work to speak directly to people: "It just fits me more. I don't know anybody who goes by the first name and their surname with friends and family. I wanted it to be more personal I guess in that sense."
He went on to explain that this is all new to him because he was never 'emotionally attached' to One Direction's music, saying: "None of the songs that I wrote in One Direction were personal to me. Whenever we'd get an award or this or that, it was never something that I was emotionally attached to. Whereas with this, I am. I know what's going to happen. I'm going to be crazy ecstatic when that album drops. I'm going to be buzzing and I'm going to go out. I'll probably party with my friends and enjoy it." Ouch, wonder how the other boys feel about that? We kinda see his point though and it really makes you wonder if other pop bands that come out of shows like X Factor
